In this piece for flute and electronics the sound of the flute is processed in real time by the computer using Max-MSP, enhancing the beautiful sound qualities and expressive capabilities of the flute, therefore resulting in new and unexpected sonorities. Ciudad de Cruces attempts to create a fluent exchange of sound between the flute and the electronics, starting from a complex language of rhythmic and gesture similarities. The process given to the flute tries to preserve the timbre qualities of the acoustic material however modifying sometimes the original gesture. The form is the way by which the gesture is restrained, articulating a “musical direction” of the piece and where at the end the performer has total freedom to complete it. Ciudad de Cruces is dedicated to Mexican flutist Eduardo González and emerges as a catharsis within the environment of violence, indifference and anguish in which we live in the state of Sinaloa (Mexico). “Something happened” during the development of our society, the unbalance and degeneration are constantly increasing. The climate of fear and uncertainty that we feel even inside our homes and the lack of will of those who can do something about it were the inspiration to this piece.
