about

Since very early in my career I have been fascinated by the repertoire for flute alone. At the same time it seemed to me as a great challenge to be able "to fill with music” a concert hall with sounds originating from an instrument that is essentially melodic and that lacks its own accompaniment, as in the contrary case of the piano. The transcending works for flute alone written by composers like Marin Marais, Johann Sebastian Bach, his son Carl Philip Emmanuel and others settled the foundations that made the flute become a soloist instrument.

Soon I realized indeed that the entire repertoire for flute alone that was written since the beginning of the 20th century contained a different, modern, daring and even avant-garde language. At the same time this language required eventually of a completely different execution technique of the instrument, far from what was traditionally known and which was named “extended technique”. This gave place to never before heard sounds and tone colors and for which the great American flutist and composer Robert Dick thought up the term “the other flute”.

Nowadays the performance of contemporary music has practically become a specialization by itself. Its high artistic and technical demands have promoted the meteoric development of one of the oldest instruments of human kind, the flute. It has even influenced in the technology of its construction as well as encouraged a high competitiveness among its players. On the other hand, I firmly believe that the mastering of all this palette of new execution techniques is of greater benefit and contributes to make the modern flutist become a more complete artist, with more resources, more possibilities of expression and at the end of the road that is exactly what we try to do in music: to communicate.

The works that I have selected to be part of this recording have marked me in some or another way. They have encouraged me, they have provided me with moments of inner thought and they have infected me with a creative impulse that I try to keep always in my mind and in my heart. It is one of my most caressed dreams as an artist to be able to transmit those emotions to everyone who hears me play the flute.

Flautisimo! is a wonderful journey across enchanting and radiant music for solo flute.
