Song is a study of interrelations between two opposing textures. The first texture is melismatic, circular and modal. The second, angular (consisting of large intervals) and non-tonal. Both textures are present at the beginning of the work. The angular material dominates the second section and the piece concludes with the melismatic texture. The musical materials of Song are derived from Persian folk music and intermingled with the atonal syntax of Western music. Mr. Vali tries to imitate the sound of the Ney, the traditional Persian flute, through the technique of simultaneous "playing" and "singing”.
