Mario Lavista was born in Mexico City. He is currently teaching the classes of Composition, Analysis and Music of the XX Century at the National Conservatory of Music of Mexico. He is the founder and director of “Pauta”, one of the best music magazines of Latin America. Mr. Lavista has been professor and guest composer at the Indiana University, University of Chicago, National University of Cuyo (Argentina), North Texas University, Wesleyan University (Illinois) and the Atlantic Center for the Arts (Florida), among others. He has collaborated closely with outstanding instrumental musicians in the composition of a series of works where he explores new technical and expressive possibilities of western traditional instruments. Mr. Lavista was appointed life member of the prestigious National College (Mexico). In the composer’s own words: “Canto del Alba belongs to a group of three pieces for solo flute written in a period of four years (the other two pieces are: Nocturno for alto flute and Lamento for bass flute). For its accomplishment I worked in close collaboration with Mexican flutists María Elena Arizpe, whose presence was fundamental in the exploration of new and unusual colors such as: multiphonics, whistle tones, production of microtones through non traditional fingerings, the use of chords in natural overtones, etc. The title of the piece alludes to the lyric genre “alba” used by the troubadors of centuries XII and XIII to announce lovers the beginning of a new day. The score includes as an epigraph a poem of Wang Wei, the Chinese poet of the Tang dynasty ":

Seated alone, between the bamboos,
I play the lute and whistle, whistle, whistle.
Nobody hears me in the immense forest,
but the white moon illuminates me.
